What is a Skinner?

Skinners harvest the skins of the many beasts within World of Warcraft to gather leather for use with leatherworking mainly although some other professions do require the odd piece of leather.

Skinning is a Primary Gathering Profession.  You can have two Primary Professions only.

Why Choose Skinning?

Should you decide to take up skinning as a profession you will find it one of the easier professions to level with quickly. The reason for this is the shear amount of resource available to the player, the creatures in the game. Players can actually start skinning quite late on and gain levels quickly. As a test we started skinning at character level 20 and while we were unable to skin creatures in the zone we were playing in it didn't take too long to level by going back to the start levels and begin skinning. The disadvantage is you don't receive experience for killing the low level creatures. Therefore, like any profession it's always better to start as early as possible in your character development.

There are two main reasons to choose skinning:

  • Supply your leatherworking profession with materials.
  • Earn money by selling skins.

Who should Choose Skinning?

Any class which can utilise leather garments would benefit from learning leatherworking and skinning together ( Rogue & Hunter). The profession is also ideal if you are wanting to collect saleable materials quickly so it really depends on your play style.

How do I become a Skinner?

As with all other professions, players must find a Skinning trainer at one of the game's many key locations such as cities or settlements.

What levels are there in Skinning?

As you progress with the profession, players need to train up in skinning levels to increase their skill in the profession. Once you max out on a trained level you need to be trained to the next level by a new trainer. You can train to any proficiency level at any point by the appropriate trainer. The levels are detailed in the table below.

You can train to four levels of proficiency and each has certain prerequisites that need to be met before you can train to the next level.

How do I Skin?

Before you can even start skinning you must purchase a skinning knife from a vendor. Without a knife there's no way of getting those skins off. You can pick one up from a trade goods merchant. The skinning knife only needs to be in your backpack {not bank}, you do not need to have it in either the main hand or off-hand.

Skinning is one of the easier professions to understand as players are simply required to kill a beast then activate the skinning icon. Before you can skin the beast it must be looted and all the loot removed from the corpse. Once the loot has been placed in your inventory or destroyed by dragging it into the centre of the screen the skinning icon will appear over the corpse. When the icon appears left click and skinning will commence. When the action is complete, indicated by the green status bar at he bottom of the screen, you loot the corpse for the second time and you will be shown the results of your skinning action.

When skinning you are limited to what you can do (you can't move your character) and you can also be interrupted if attacked.

If you are playing a Hunter you can track any beasts on your top right mini-map using the Beast Tracking ability, this is very handy for hunting down groups of creatures to skin. It's worth noting though that not all creatures are skinnable, only those in the category of Beast.

How do I level up in Skinning?

Each zone in the game features different levels for resource gathering.

All Beasts require you to be a certain skinning skill level before you can skin them. Below is a table highlighting the skinning skill level you need to be to successfully skin in that zone.  Charts supplied by Eiger.

How does the skill advance?

Practice makes perfect. The more you skin the quicker your proficiency in the skill will advance. Note that you can only skin creatures within your skinning level. These are indicated by a colour code scheme on corpses so you can identify which creatures can be skinned and which will either increase or not increase your skinning level. To level quickly with a new skinner try and skin everything in yellow, this will increase your skinning level quicker.

  • Grey = No skill increase.
  • Green = Unlikely to get a Skinning skill point.
  • Yellow = Probably get a Skinning skill point.
  • Orange = Will receive a Skinning skill point.
  • Red = Can not Skin yet, need a higher skill level in Skinning before being able to

Can I skin any level creature?

The simple answer is no, You must have gained enough skinning points to skin certain level creatures. The better your skinning skill the higher the level of creatures you will be able to skin. Also note that when you first start skinning and the creature you are skinning is of a higher level or your skinning proficiency is low, you do have a chance to fail the skinning process. More often than not it will just say failed and you can try again. However the corpse may disappear if you are unsuccessful.

What do skinners receive once they have finished skinning?

Skinning can produce numerous skin types such as Ruined Scraps (2 of these can be turned into 1 light leather by a Leatherworker),  Light Leather, Medium Leather, Heavy Leather, Light Hide, Medium Hide, Heavy Hide, Thick Leather and Thick Hide.

What can Skins be used for

  • Skins can be sold for cash
  • Skins can be used by a Leatherworker to create garments such as armor so good for Druids, Hunters, Rogues and Shamans
  • Engineering also requires leather for some recipes such as the target dummy.
  • Tailoring can also require leather

So you can either marry skinning with one of those professions yourself or sell your skins to players who have taken those professions and make yourself some money.

If I see a corpse I didn't kill, can I skin it?

Yes, if you see other beast corpses lying around that you didn't kill, you can skin the corpse and reap the rewards.

What is Ninja-Skinning?

This is a practice frowned upon by skinners. When you kill a beast and loot the corpse any other skinner can come along and skin your kill should you be pre-occupied. It's best practice to give people time to move away from a corpse before skinning and don't jump in on other people's corpses if they are unable to skin right away. You should always check if the person by the corpse is a skinner or not by checking the professions icon under their character icon which appears at the top of the screen if you select them. To prevent other Ninja-skinners, kill the beast and don't loot it, return to it when you have killed other beasts in the vicinity. Leaving the loot on the corpse will prevent anyone else skinning it.

Can I unlearn skinning?

Yes, you can unlearn skinning by going to your character's skills screen and click the untrain icon. This will wipe our any progress you made with the skill. It won't remove the skins you've collected with it however.

To recap on the Engineering basics:

  • Skinning is a Primary Gathering Profession and therefore counts towards you two primary profession quota
  • Can only skin corpses of Beasts
  • Can only skin once the corpse has been fully looted
  • Do not need to have killed the beast to skin it
  • Ninja skinning is for lazy bastards who can't be bothered to kill the beasts themselves and would rather sponge off the efforts of other skinners'
  • Best paired with Leatherworking {another primary profession}

This table details the skins a Skinner can get, from which level of beast and where. Also detailed is how much a single unit of each can be sold to a vendor for and which other Professions utilize these skins and in how many recipes. Skins stack to 10.
